Following their marriage, Fred and Rachel lived in Cornell, Wisconsin. Fred worked at the Cornell Paper Mill until 1925. In that year, Fred and Rachel purchased an eighty-acre farm in the Town of Delmar.1 They bred and raised grade Holstein cattle and Brown Leghorn chickens. Fred and Rachel also owned an eighty-acre parcel of land in the Town of Colburn (purchased for $700).2

Mary Ramminger lived on the farm just north of Grandpa and Grandma's place. Her husband Ambros died circa 1924. It is said that Alfred, their son, liked to make moonshine. He would often hide the moonshine on Grandpa and Grandma's property. Grandpa didn't much care for that, however, their friendship didn't seem to suffer because of it. Alfred was Grandpa's godfather when he converted to the Catholic faith in 1932.

Naiberg barn raising in 1935

In 1935, the logs and stone from a recently cleared section of land were used to build a new dairy barn, replacing the original log barn. Pete Streit, a local carpenter, oversaw the construction of the barn. For his services, Fred paid Pete $1.50 a day. With the help of friends and neighbors, the frame of the barn was raised in one day. A two-foot thick stone and mortar wall supports the wood frame structure. The barn still stands today, a tribute to the craftsmen that built it nearly seventy years ago.

Fred and Rachel ran a prosperous dairy for 32 years until their retirement from farming in 1958. In that year, the farm was sold to Harold and Genevieve De Bruin and the "eighty" in Colburn was sold to their son Donald.
